A KwaZulu-Natal professor has told Radio Islam that the anti-Indian sentiment is gaining momentum in the province.
This comes after the Ethekwini Municipality’s attempts to improve the spending power of Africans – under the age of 35 by excluding Indians and coloureds from an official car auction which has drawn widespread criticism.
The event was officially dubbed a radical economic transformation (RET) auction which involved the selling off of various used municipal vehicles from the city fleet site.
The auction was advertised in a local newspaper which stipulated it would only allow the participation of young people from townships as well as military veterans.
KZN professor Brij Maharaj says the anti-Indian sentiment in KZN has been building up for the past few years.
“There is a kind of institutional bias from the city itself which emerges from the higher echelons of the Durban metro and this targets South African of Indian descent. Ironically, this is the same discourse that was used by the apartheid government and colonial authority since 1860.”
Maharaj says there’s nothing wrong with affirmative action, but the way it’s being implemented fuels discrimination and racism.
