The African National Congress (ANC) Regional Secretary for Tshwane says allegations that party members entered a masjid in Centurion and tried to stop the athan and salaah are false and blatant lies.

A compliance notice from the Tshwane Health Department widely circulated on social media also charged the Muslim community with contravening the Gauteng noise control regulation act 5479 of 1999.

The notice warned the Muslim community to stop the athan with immediate effect.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Eugene Modise says the notice was issued by people who purported to be ANC members.

“We realised that when there was allegations making rounds on social media, that we as the ANC have sent people to stop the practice and evict Muslims from their mosque, which is wrong, which is unfounded and which is lies. We would like to apologise to the Muslim community for this unfortunate incident.”

Modise says it is important to note that the Muslim community is always represented in ANC activities and events.

“We as the ANC have been friends with the Muslim community, our history can tell you that. Our organisation was formed in church and we respect churches and all religious dominations.”

He says the letter that was circulated on social media is fake and there is no objections by the ANC members against Muslims, the athan and masaajid in general.

Modise says the regional members of the ANC will be meeting with the Muslim community in Centurion to clarify the matter.
