The South African Muslim Network (Samnet) has invited all South Africans from different races, religions and cultures across the country to experience and understand the beauty and diversity of Islam at the its annual National Mosque Open Day.
At least 44 Masajid in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape are participating in the initiative on Heritage Day on 24 September.
South Africans are encouraged to celebrate their culture and the diversity of their beliefs and traditions on Heritage Day in the wider context of a nation that belongs to all its people.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Samnet’s Dr Faizal Suliman says he wants the Mosque Open Day to educate South Africans about Islam and Muslims.
“We looked overseas and after 9/11, a similar programme was started out in the United States and United Kingdom and it was very successful. So we thought why not and then of course what will be an appropriate day and we thought in keeping with and fall into that bracket of heritage.”
Suliman says since the initiative was started, they have received wonderful feedback with many people saying that they have a better understanding of Islam after their visit to a masjid.
