Anti-apartheid activist Ahmed Timol’s nephew says he wants former apartheid cop Joao Roderigues to know that he will not rest until justice is served.
Roderigues will have his day in court after losing an application he lodged in a bid to have his prosecution for the murder of Timol stayed.
The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg on Wednesday dismissed the leave to appeal application.
Rodrigues is charged with Timol’s murder following an inquiry Last year in which the High Court in Pretoria ruled that the apartheid struggle stalwart did not commit suicide but was rather pushed to his death on October 27, 1971, while he was in police detention at the then-notorious John Vorster Square in Johannesburg.
Timol’s nephew, Imtiaz Cajee says he wants to preserve his uncle’s legacy and ensure that justice is served.
“Every time he comes to court, to know that as long as he lives, this matter will not be laid to rest until he face the full wrath of the law, or alternatively he opts for a plea bargain which he must make a full confession of what was his role in the murder of my beloved uncle.”
Cajee says Roderigues fellow security branch officers Neville Els and Seth Sons should also be investigated and brought to justice, but the state is dragging its feet.
“In the case of Neville Els and Seth Sons, more than eighteen months later, the investigation to date has still not been concluded. So it is very clear, that the National Prosecuting Authority with the Hawks who are responsible for investigating this matter don’t take apartheid era crimes seriously.”
The case against Roderigues is expected to continue on 25 September.
