Advocate Gerrie Nel of AfriForum’s private prosecution has commended the police for the arrest of five suspects in connection with the murder of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.
The arrests comes exactly six years after the murder in Vosloorus.
Meyiwa was shot dead while visiting his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo at her mothers home
Speaking to Radio Islam, Nel says the police report showed that Meyiwa was deliberately killed in a hit and not a robbery.
“We compliment the police with this arrests. But it’s one thing to arrest five people, but if there is a contract killing, the main person, the mastermind should be arrested and should be prosecuted. We’ve also received a briefing as far as the identity of the mastermind is concerned and I am fairly concerned that we’ll see arrests soon.”
Nel says despite it taking so long for the suspects to be arrested, the focus now must be on a successful prosecution.
“Now we must concentrate on the trial. They’ve arrested people, but I think the proof of the pudding is in the eating and the eating is the trial. So we’ll still be supporting the Meyiwa family.”
The suspects are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrates Court today
Both Nel and the police agree that there’s enough evidence to convict the five arrested including ballistic and forensic evidence.
