Editor-in-Chief of News24 Adriaan Basson says former President Jacob Zuma’s letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa was poor and vindictive.

On the eve of the ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeing, Zuma entered the fray, writing a scathing letter spewing insults at Ramaphosa’s historic plea to African National Congress (ANC) members to bring an end to corruption in the party.

Ramaphosa on Monday while addressing the outcomes of the NEC meeting which took place in Irene at the weekend said he does not see the letter as an insult and that there would be no disciplinary process against Zuma.

Basson says he was surprised that Zuma had written a letter to Ramaphosa.

“I was actually quite upset about the insincerity of the letter. The fact that Zuma completely ignores his own role in state capture, averting in organs of state and our law enforcement agencies. I thought let’s turn the tables and imagine that Zuma had a moment of honesty and unburdening and what he could have written in another lifetime.”

Basson says South Africans must keep on reminding Zuma about the corruption he was involved in and that he must be held accountable for it.

“We know his in court for his old corruption case involving Shabir Shaik and the arms deal. But there’s still many outstanding matters regarding the Gupta’s and state capture that needs to go to court.”

He says Zuma is extremely intelligent, knows what he doing and was part of a cunning strategy to enrich himself and entrench his power.

Basson adds that the fact that Ramaphosa got the ANC NEC to endorse his own letter and effectively reject Zuma’s letter is a major coup and win for the President and also the start of him taking charge of the ruling party.
