Africa 4 Palestine Director Muhammed Desai says the signing of the “Abraham Accord” by United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Israel is worse than a “stab in the back”.
Human rights organization Africa 4 Palestine, the South African Communist Party (SACP) and civil society protested outside the UAE embassy in Pretoria on Wednesday against the agreement between the trio.
On Tuesday US President Donald Trump hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani at the White House in Washington, for the signing of the “Abraham Accord”.
The “Abraham Accord” is an agreement in which the UAE and Bahrain will depart from their decades long commitment of boycotting and not having relations with Israel until it ends its unlawful occupation of Palestine.
Desai says the agreement is a betrayal of the solidarity Arab countries gave the Palestinian people.
“…And at this time and for example South Africa has withdrawn its ambassador from Tel Aviv, when the Presbetrayan Church, Methodist Church have all adopted a boycott of Israel and there is a growing isolation of that regime, it’s really sad,it’s really a sad day that Donald Trump can bring together these two countries to give up on the Palestinian people.”
The SACP’s Solly Thabata says they are angry over the agreement between the UAE, Bahrain and Israel.
“This Israel and USA, they must stop what they are doing to the Palestinians, because Palestinians, those are our brothers and sisters. Our view as SACP, we’ll come here each and every month and demand that the USA must stop what nonsense they are doing to Palestine.”
On Monday, Palestinian journalist Daoud Kuttab says US President Donald Trump has found weak links in some Arab countries to foster ties with Israel and get re-elected as president of the United States.
