The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) says while there may be no demerits points for disobeying e-tolls, motorists may be fined R 250 for every gantry passed.
Outa has warned that if the Aarto Act, which was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa last week, is implemented, it will cost those without e-tags a thousand rand to travel between Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Outa says it remains to be seen how Aarto would classify the signs instructing drivers to pay e-tolls to force people to pay.
Speaking to Radio Islam, Outa’s Rudie Heyneke says the process could be problematic.
“We are also very concerned about the whole process because those infringement notices must reach you so that you can act on them. You must be able to make representations and at the end of the day if you are not happy with the tribunal find you can go to court and challenge it.”
All eyes are now on Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula’s deadline to announce the future of the contentious tolling system.
The minister, who leads a task team established, last month by President Cyril Ramaphosa, has until Saturday to unveil a viable solution to the e-toll debacle.
