A former gangster who turned his life around and became the chairperson of the Philippi Community Police Forum says he is leading a more peaceful and fulfilling life away from a lifestyle of gangsterism and violence.
Ebrahim Abrahams was speaking to Radio Islam on Monday about how he is trying to make a difference in his community.
He was only 13-years-old when the Group Areas Act forced his family out of District Six and into the undeveloped plains of the Cape Flats, Abrahams was still in his teens when he became a gangster.
Abrahams says his life changed when he got married.
“When I got married, and then it became something different, my responsibilities become more and make myself ready to be a married man. Then I start going to mosque because when I was unmarried, I passed the mosque. But now being married gave me a different mindset.”
Abrahams says has been a member of the local SA Police Service (SAPS) watchdog for the past 20 years.
