Residents of Lenasia South have called for the removal of the entire staff at the local police station following the death of a 53-year-old woman.
Community members marched to the Lenasia police station today demanding justice for Rita Pillay and the lack of adequate service by police in the area.
Pillay was killed after an apparent shootout with police last month in what the family believe was a case of mistaken identity.
However police say they were fired upon from individuals in an unknown vehicle in which Pillay was a passenger.
Justice for Rita echoed through the suburb of Lenasia South.
The large crowd marched from slain Rita Pillay’s home in Azalea Street to the Lenasia South police station demanding justice for her alleged killing by police and also for the lack of adequate service by the men and women in blue.
Family member Nina Kuni says staff at the Lenasia South police station are incompetent.
“We call for the removal of the entire SAP staff personnel at the Lenasia South police station and the replacement of new staff members with an organisational structure shared with the community at large.”
Local resident Sathia Moodley says Lenasia South police station has a history of criminal activity.
“We looking at polices that were involved drunk, we looking at poor service from here and now we looking at the death of the community (sic). We not taking this anymore and we don’t want incompetent people here.”
Residents handed over a memorandum to a representative of the police station who said it would be escalated to higher authority which would provide feedback.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate’s (IPID) Moses Dlamini told Radio Islam it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Rita Pillay.
