While calm has been restored to Lenasia South after a day of volatile protests, officials have promised residents they’ll get to the bottom of the land invasion issue.
Yesterday the community took to the streets barricading the K43 road near Ennerdale with burning tyres and rocks.
Five people were injured when police fired rubber bullets during the demonstration.
Residents have since laid criminal charges against the SAPS.
Regional director for region G Mickey Padiachee has assured residents he would do all he can to resolve the building of illegal structures on land close their homes.
“This screaming, shouting and the violence will not help us. What we want is to resolve the matter amicably around the table. So we propose the following, the ones that is invading the land, the leaders of that, yourselves as a community, the member of the mayoral committee and we will then outline to you what is currently happening.”
Shirley Brijlal, a reporter at a local newspaper says the land invasion by people from as far as Orange Farm is unforgivable.
“We cannot as residents of Lenasia South accept a situation where we got people coming in from all over the place including people in BM’s and Mercedes Benz and fancy cars, coming here and marking land which they will eventually then sell to poor people. So what’s happening here is not about the needy, it’s about the greedy.”
Residents are expected to meet with local government this evening to discuss ways to combat the invasions.
