A 48-year-old man was shot and killed in what seemed to be an apparent hit in Lenasia Extension 2, south of Johannesburg on Saturday Gauteng police said.

The police’s Kay Makhubela said the two suspects fled the scene after shooting the man.

“We understand they (suspects) are known to the family,” said Makhubela.

A source told Radio Islam there is a history of tension between the two families who are actively involved in drugs that have plagued the area.

The source said the man’s wife and children were also in the car when he was killed.

Makhubela said a case of murder has been opened.

On the 30th June last year, SANCA Nistara, a drug rehabilitation centre, organized a motorcade through the streets of Lenasia in support the launch of Drug Watch.

Deputy President of the ANC Cyril Ramaphosa, local politicians, Gauteng Roads and Transport MEC Ismail Vadi, Chairman of the Gauteng Community Police Forum Board, Andy Mashaile, Head of Crime Line and Lead SA activist Yusuf Abramjee and local police chiefs led the anti-drug campaign.

The event started from the Signet Terrace Shopping Centre where Lenasians from all walks of life gathered which included dozens of bikers, and hundreds of vehicles that stopped at the houses of various suspected drug dealers.
