A Lenasia man has been killed after his car hit a rock on the N12 highway.
It’s understood Ebrahim (Babes) Karolia passed away early this morning after his car rolled when it hit a rock on the N12 West heading towards Lenasia after the Golden Highway exit.
The JMPD’s Wayne Minnaar says the placing of rocks on certain highways is a serious problem that they have previously dealt with.
Minnaar says the motive for the modus operandi is to rob motorists.
“What these criminals do is they place the rocks on the road with the objective of getting a car damaged. So when the tyres or wheels of a vehicle goes flat then you have to stop to change the wheel and when that happens they get a chance to attack, to rob the people.”
Minnaar says because of the recurring scourge of placing rocks on the highway, JMPD officers will have to be deployed to monitor the area.
“We have to get officers to be more visible, particularly on the N1. A few years ago there was a very nasty incident where a rock was thrown from a bridge on the N1 at Main Reef Road where a girl died.”
Minnaar says there’s been similar incidents along other highways and has urged motorists to be vigilant when travelling on these route especially late at night.
