The Automobile Association says the latest petrol price increase will have a massive impact on the poor.
The Energy Department yesterday announced the price of fuel is set to rise by 72 cents per litre from 4 April.
Diesel will cost 65.20c/l more while the wholesale price of illuminating paraffin will drop 2.30c/l.
The retail price of LPG will increase by 39.00c/kg.
The Energy Department says one of the main reasons for the fuel price adjustments are the increase in the Fuel and Road Accident Fund Levies as announced by the Minister of Finance in his Budget Speech on 21 February 2018.
The AA’s Layton Beard says the increased announced by the finance minister was way above inflation.
“Not a lot of thought has been given on how this impacts on people, specifically those who are very poor. People rely on public transport like taxi’s and buses and this is really going to be passed on to them. Those taxi’s and busses need to recover this money and they are going to do that by passing these increases on to consumers and it’s really those people who are going to suffer the most.”
