Trade union Solidarity says the action taken to suspend a Grade R teacher at the centre of the Schweizer-Reneke saga has left her traumatised.
Solidarity says it will take legal action against the North West Education Department following the suspension of Elana Barkhuzizen.
The union is expected to hold a media briefing in Pretoria this afternoon.
Solidarity says the Provincial Education Department unfairly suspended Barkhuizen as she was not the teacher in charge of that class.
A picture which has gone viral shows a group of white pupils in a classroom sitting together while their four black classmates sit at a small table at the door.
Chief Executive Dirk Hermann says North West’s MEC for Education, Sello Lehari’s hasty actions led to Barkhuizen’s unlawful suspension while being innocent.
“The suspension of Ms Barkhuizen was absolutely unlawful. The MEC just hastily in front of a crowd decided in Ubuntu Court style to suspend the first person and the first name that he could get. That she was not employed by him and it was the wrong teacher and that led to a lot of trauma for this teacher.”
Herman says they will also take steps against political parties that have exploited the incident for political gain.
