KwaZulu-Natal police are searching for 23 awaiting trial prisoners who escaped from a truck that was transporting them from the Pietermaritzburg New Prison to the local magistrate’s court.
It is understood that 45 prisoners were being driven by two police officers on Wednesday when they were stopped by a double cab bakkie with five heavily armed men.
The police’s Jay Naicker says the suspects pointed guns at the officers and forced them to open the rear of the truck.
“Police officers then opened the rear of the vehicle. Thirty-one one of the forty-five awaiting trial prisoners escaped in the process. A manhunt is underway for the escapees.”
In an update, Naicker says 22 prisoners are now in custody while 23 are still on the run.
