The National Funeral Directors Association of KwaZulu-Natal says the situation at the Stellawood Crematorium has reached critical stage with Bodies piling up without proper refrigeration.
The organisation says the problem has been exacerbated by the torching of the Port Shepstone Crematorium a few months ago putting pressure on existing facilities.
Spokesperson Dallas Gilbert says with state crematoriums around the city out of order, pressure was being placed on Stellawood, which in turn has resorted to the illegal practice of not refrigerating bodies.
He says the funeral fraternity are facing an ongoing challenge when it comes to cremations.
“It’s an absolute unacceptable situation at Stellawood Crematorium. The problem has been almost forced on to Stellawood because there is no other immediate alternative for assisting to alleviate the demand for cremations at the moment versus supply of crematoriums.”
Gilbert says Cato Ridge Crematorium which is not being utilized and requires permission to be opened could alleviate the pressure on Stellawood.
