Several schools in KwaZulu-Natal have been closed due to heavy rain and flooding.

Emergency services were kept busy in the early hours of this morning as reports of collapsed houses and flooded schools were received from areas including Malvern, Overport and Chatsworth.

Several roads in the south of the city were also flooded or blocked as the Umhlatuzana river burst its banks and flooded a bridge.

Academic Head at the Al Habib school Zaheda Sheikh has urged parents to keep their children at home.

“There’s severe flooding in KZN. Many of the roads are closed, some schools are actually flooded and due to this adverse weather conditions we decided to close school at Al Habib and Al Huda until the weather becomes a bit conducive. It’s best that parents do keep their children at home today, stay indoors, be safe.”

The South African Weather Service is warning that the rain could persist in provinces including the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, the North West and the Free State until Wednesday.
