Mail and Guardian and Scorpio Investigative journalist Pauli Van Wyk has told Radio Islam that the CEO of auditing firm KPMG was warned about doing work for the controversial Gupta family.

Trevor Hoole is among the 8 senior executives who’ve resigned while another one faces disciplinary action and dismissal after KPMG International launched an investigation into its work on behalf of the Gupta’s as well as for SARS.

The investigation relates to a series of damning stories by amaBhungane and Scorpio based on the #GuptaLeaks which revealed how the Guptas laundered millions of rand earmarked for emerging black farmers in the Free State through Dubai to pay for the “event of the millennium” – the Sun City wedding.

KPMG has written an apology to South Africa explaining its role in auditing Gupta-owned companies and providing a report that was used to force former finance minister Pravin Gordhan out of Cabinet.

Van Wyk says KPMG’s “apology” is weak on admitting their own culpability in the problems they created for South Africa.

“The problem with his resignation is that he was warned about these things and it didn’t seem that he did enough at the time that he was warned I don’t think that all the people worked on the matter resigned or were kicked out of KPMG but its more the people that in the end knew about it and did nothing.”

Van Wyk says KPMG took a leaf from Bell Pottinger’s book on Friday by releasing a statement slathered in PR speak saying that while the investigation did not identify any evidence of illegal behaviour or corruption by KPMG partners or staff, the investigation did find work that fell considerably short of KPMG’s standards.
