Knysna Residents Win Court Battle for Masjid Construction

April 05, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 05-04-2017

The Muslim community in Knysna are ecstatic after the Western Cape High Court dismissed an application to stop the construction of a masjid in the town.

The 22 Rawson Street Homeowners in Knysna objected to the building of the masjid in the town centre because of traffic and parking allocations.

Judge Daniel Dlodlo handed down the judgement today and dismissed with costs, the application to set aside the construction of the place of worship.

The Knysna Muslim Council’s (KMC) Omar Essa told Radio Islam they are ecstatic by the outcome of the judgement.

“We can say Allahu Akbar and Alhamdulillah. There is no words that can describe. It’s been a nine year struggle for us, so we are extremely happy and ecstatic that the court has found in our favour. Our case was fairly strong and we followed all due process and I think the court has realised that an agreed with us.”

Essa says they will now submit their building plans for the masjid to the municipality for approval.

“That takes about plus minus two months and as soon as the building plans have been approved we can start with construction. So we are hoping Insha’Allah that by towards June or July at the latest we can physically go and start construction.”

The KMC submitted an application to Knysna Municipality in September 2014 for the rezoning of the property to allow the building of the masjid complex.
