Kazakhstan: Angry Protestors Storm Almaty Mayor’s Office

January 05, 2022

Umm Muhammed Umar

As nationwide protests grip Kazakhstan for a fourth day, a government building in the country’s biggest city, Almaty, has been overrun by protestors. This was despite President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, having fired Kazakhstan’s government early on Wednesday, in addition to declaring a state of emergency in Almaty and the surrounding province.

There was reportedly a fire at the office of the mayor of Almaty on Wednesday, after it was stormed by protestors, with gunshots having been heard. Protestors outside the building were shot at by security forces with stun grenades. There was also a fire at the city prosecutor’s office. Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the presidential residence in Almaty as well.

Protesters have been accused by police of having assaulted 500 civilians and of looting hundreds of businesses. More than 200 protestors have been arrested.

According Al Jazeera, the protests began over a spike in fuel prices.

Meanwhile, an internet blackout has been imposed on the country as of Wednesday afternoon.
