Justice Project South Africa (JPSA) has withdrawn its endorsement of the “Blue Light Protocol” it developed with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in 2013 saying it needs to be amended.
This comes after a woman was seen being violently manhandled by Tshwane Metro Police officers in CCTV footage at a petrol station last week, after she allegedly failed to stop for them in a poorly lit area.
JPSA Chair, Howard Dembovsky says the protocol was developed to combat the prevalence of criminals using easily acquired blue lights and other police equipment to pose as law enforcement authorities.
Dembovksy says JPSA has found that people are loosely following the “Blue Light Protocol” which it put together in 2013 with severe consequences.
“This is leading to people being beaten up, kidnapped, raped and even murdered by genuine police. This situation is now intolerable and its needs to come to an end. Essentially what we are doing is we are withdrawing our endorsement of the very protocol that we authored and we are going to replace it with a new protocol.”
Dembovksy says while failure to stop is a criminal offence when instructed by police, if motorists feel unsafe they should immediately call 10111 to verify the authenticity of the police stopping them
