World-renowned Pakistani nasheed artist Junaid Jamshed has died in a plane crash.

The Pakistan International Airlines flight (PIA) PK-661 with 47 passengers on board was on its way to Islamabad from the mountainous northern city Chitral on Wednesday when it crashed at the Patola village near Pakistan Ordinance Factory, Havelian.

Global aviation watchdog Aviation Herald says flight PK-661 crashed due to engine problems.

Taj Muhammad Khan a government official based in the Havelian region told Reuters there were unlikely to be any survivors.

“All of the bodies are burned beyond recognition. The debris is scattered.”

Khan adds witnesses told him “the aircraft has crashed in a mountainous area, and before it hit the ground it was on fire”.

According to Geo TV the passenger list also included Jamshed’s wife.

Jamshed’s fellow Islamic scholar Mehmood Alam says the nasheed artist was in Chitral for Islamic work.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan also expressed his condolence over the tragic crash in a tweet on social media platform Twitter.
