The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) says roadworks on the M1 highway in Johannesburg will be halted during the festive season from the 14th of December until construction resumes again on the 15th of January.
The JRA says the approved completion date for the roadworks is due next year, but it hopes to complete the work by April.
The closure of several lanes in recent months have caused heavy traffic delays on the route.
Head of infrastructure at the agency Siyabonga Genu says the pause of the roadworks will provide some relief to motorists during the festive season.
“We just want to urge them, we know it’s painful to drive through a construction site, but obviously it’s for a better future. So we want to urge motorists again to just bear with us, slow down and obey the temporary signage that’s been put up.”
