The owner of Jolly Grubber says the bathrooms at his restaurants are for his patrons only and has justified the charges to use the facility.
This come after a Durban man was furious about having to fork out R40 for him and his wife to use the toilet at the north beach restaurant.
Reeza Khan took to social media this week to vent about the R20-per-person fee that Jolly Grubber charges non-customers to use the facilities.
Khan wrote on Facebook: “In my whole entire existence on this earth.. this is the most expensive p*** I’ve ever taken… R20 each to use the rest rooms.. That’s ridiculous… oh wowwww and to top it off‚ we even received a slip for the facilities used #daylightrobberybutatnight.”
The Jolly Grubber has a sign at the entrance which reads: “Buying just drinks will not qualify you to use these toilets. Therefore it is unlawful/dishonest/theft/haraam to use this facility without permission. Service charge of R20 per person payable at the counter. This is not a public toilet.”
Jolly Grubber Director Junaid Moola told Radio Islam, he stands by his decision to charge the R20 fee.
“For my patrons it’s for free, for non-patrons they must pay especially when its positioned on the beachfront, I have to keep my toilets clean for my customers. So I have to deter the general public away. There is public toilets downstairs.”
Moola claims Khan allegedly bought food from another restaurant and decided to use his bathroom facilities.
“He should be quite clear that he was dishonest, he didn’t ask for permission, he read the sign, took a photograph of the sign, he snuck into the premises and decided to sneak out when he was called over to pay his bill. That’s when he started making more off a drama about it.”
Moola says the R20 fee covers the costs of cleaning the bathroom‚ water and electricity.
