Joburg Mayor Herman Mashaba Heckled at Lenasia IDP Summit

April 25, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 25-04-2018

An Integrated Development Plan (IDP) summit by Johannesburg executive mayor Herman Mashaba turned to chaos when he was heckled by angry residents who wanted feedback on service delivery issues.

Mashaba was conducting the Region G Joburg IDP summit at the Civic Centre in Lenasia last night as part of the city’s outreach to consult communities on its draft plans for 2018/2019.

The objective of the regional summits it to present the draft 2018/2019 IDP plans, budget and tariffs proposal to communities.

Mashaba’s speech was disrupted and subsequently cancelled after residents became rowdy and started protesting.

City of Johannesburg speaker Vasco da Gama says the city organised eleven buses to transport residents from Eldorado Park, Orange Farm, Ennerdale, Lenasia South and Lenasia for the meeting.

Da Gama says the protest was organised by residents of other wards.

“I went to the process and introduced the mayor. Two minutes into his speech, they started insisting that they speak and that he stop speaking and that’s where everything went sour. But you could see that it was organised from different wards, so the meeting than went completely into chaos and after that we had to cancel the meeting.”

Da Gama says no other meeting has been scheduled for Lenasia.
