Joburg EMS to Stop Services if Attacks on Paramedics Continue

April 24, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 24-04-2018

The City of Johannesburg says it may consider certain areas as no go zones for emergency services following a number of attacks on paramedics.

The city has condemned two separate attacks EMS personnel over the weekend and says it’s concerned about the escalation of incidents on paramedics who were attacked, robbed or hijacked while assisting communities.

On Saturday ambulance crews based at the Northview Fire Station were shot at while attending to an assault case in Sandringham they survived the incident unharmed.

On Sunday Four Paramedics based at the Eldorado Park Fire Station were attacked by members of the community while attending to a female patient who was badly assaulted by her boyfriend in Freedom Park.

Joburg EMS’s Robert Mulaudzi while they will engage with community structures, CPF’s and local ward councillors to keep paramedics safe while attending to a scene, they will have no choice if attacks on emergency personnel continue unabated.

“After our community engagement, that will be our last resort. If these attacks continue, we won’t have any other choice but to stop services in those specific areas. We cannot afford situations where we risk our personnel knowing very well that they are going to be attacked.”
