As the cold front moves in to Gauteng, Joburg Emergency Service says it will be keeping an eye on vulnerable communities during the cold snap.

The weather bureau has warned that Gauteng residents can expect a drop in temperatures, with the mercury dipping to 17 degrees and a freezing 11 degrees on Friday.

The cold weather conditions is expected to last until the weekend.

Joburg Emergency Services Robert Mulaudzi says they will remain high alert to respond to any emergency which may occur during the cold weather conditions.

“The cold snap is expected to hit most parts of the city of Johannesburg. We would like to urge all our residents to look after all their heating and lighting devices, things like candles, paraffin stoves, not to leave them unattended while they try to warm themselves.”

At the same time, City Power says it’s currently experiencing capacity constraint challenges which could lead to power outages.
It says the cold temperatures have resulted in overloading and an increase in demand.
