JMPD: K43 in Lenasia Not Safe for Motorists

January 25, 2018

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 24-01-2018

The K43 in Lenasia remains closed on Thursday following volatile service delivery protests by residents of the Thembelihle informal settlement.

Residents went on the rampage on Monday stoning cars, blocking roads with rocks, debris and burning tyres.

Several cars were damaged including reports of shops being looted by the protesters.

It’s understood the residents are protesting over service delivery issues including the lack of housing in the area.

Some schools in an around the K43 have also closed their doors on Thursday and Friday for safety reasons due to the ongoing service delivery protests.

The JMPD’s Wayne Minnaar says officers are monitoring the situation.

“The K43 is not open to traffic as a result of rocks and tyres on the road, its not safe for motorists to drive on. It’s blocked off between Volta Road and Lenmed. Motorists can use either Lawley Road or Golden Highway or even Nirvana Drive as alternative routes.”
