JMPD Increases Patrols on N12 Near Lenasia to Stop Rock Throwing

August 23, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 23-08-2017

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) says it has increased patrols on the N12 West freeway between the Golden Highway and Lenasia after numerous incidents of rock throwing.

Criminals use the stretch of highway in an attempt to hijack motorists by placing rocks on the road or throwing rocks from the overhead bridge to get cars to stop.

Several motorists have been hijacked and even lost their lives in accidents as a result of the stone-throwing modus operandi.

The JMPD’s Wayne Minnaar says they are patrolling the N12 on a 24-hour basis.

“JMPD is also in communication with the Lenasia Community Patrol and when there is an incident, they do communicate with JMPD so that we can dispatch officers to that specific location even though there are officers on patrol on the N12 on a 24-hours basis.”

Minnaar has urged motorist to be aware of their surroundings especially when driving at night on the N12.

“We want to encourage people not to stop immediately. They should at least take the Lenasia off-ramp or as far as Golden Highway off-ramp where there is more people and usually officers at the top of the off-ramp or to the nearest police station for help.

Last year Ebrahim (Babes) Karolia was tragically killed after his car rolled when it hit a rock on the N12 West heading towards Lenasia after the Golden Highway exit.
