As the second wave of COVID-19 continues to spread in the country and with a new variant of the Coronavirus announced by Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize, the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa (JUSA) has appealed to congregations, families and the general public to take appropriate measures and precaution in order to prevent the further spread of the virus.

In a statement, Jusa says complacency has set in after infections were on the decline and alert levels lowered.

Secretary General Ml Ebrahim Bham says the risk of COVID-19  infections and fatalities remain lurking and are real.

“The news that a new and even more contagious COVID-19 strain is responsible for most of the fresh cases in the surge of infections in parts of the country should be of concern to all of us. We are once more, witnessing a rising number of members of our communities testing positive for Covid-19 and some, sadly being lost to complications associated with the coronavirus.”

Ml Bham has urged South Africans and Muslims to take appropriate measures that will be in the interest of public health and safety.

“Our actions determine the conditions that Allah sends down. Together with taking all necessary precautions we should also shun vice, repent [taubah], abundantly seek forgiveness [istighfar], engage in virtuous deeds, and sincerely supplicate [du’aa] to the Almighty, so that the disease and the hardships brought by the pandemic can be lifted away from our midst.”

Ml Bham says we owe it to each other, by neither attaching stigma to those who need our compassion nor being in denial about the reality of the Coronavirus and what it requires of all of us, without causing any unnecessary dissension and discord.

“Whoever fears Allah, Allah will find a way out for him (from every difficulty)” (Noble Qur’an 65:2-3)
