Jamiatul Ulama SA Condemns Anti-Muslim Graffiti in Tshwane

September 15, 2016

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 15-09-2016

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has condemned the discovery of anti-Muslim graffiti slogans painted in parts of Tshwane, north of Johannesburg.

The graffiti which reads “No Muslims” and “F**k Muslims” is believed to have been painted in the wake of Eid-ul-Adha on Monday and has compelled the community to hold an urgent meeting to address the sudden wave of anti-Islamism.

Secretary General of Jamiatul Ulama South Africa Moulana Ebrahim Bham says they view the anti-Muslim slogans in a very serious light.

“We look at this with great concern and we condemn this. Peaceful co-existence is a necessary and a vital ingredient of living in a multi-cultural and multi-religious society and if these type of acts happen than it impacts negatively upon peaceful co-existence.”

Moulana Bham says the Jamiat will be monitoring the situation and hope Insha’Allah that the reason for the anti-Muslim graffiti could be “nipped in the bud.”

At the same time, DA councillor Benjamin Lawrence told the Pretoria News yesterday that the acts were foreign to the community.

Lawrence says the slogans were far removed from the unity that had been created since the township’s inception in 1966 and that the incident had angered the community.

“We cannot allow this issue to go beyond our community. We are not Muslims and Christians, we are a community, and in my opinion, this is not something that coloured people like.”

Lawrence says he hopes that such actions would be quelled before they were allowed to spread beyond the boundaries of Eersterus.

The Police’s Sam Shibambo says the vandalism had not been reported and was therefore not being investigated.
