Jamiatul Ulama Launches Campaign To Eradicate Pit Toilets In South African Schools

March 13, 2019

Radio Islam International – 2019/03/13

The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa together with the Gift of the Givers have launched a campaign to eradicate ‘pit toilets’ from South African schools.

In a statement, the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa says that 25 years down democracy lane and more than 4,000 schools in the country still have pit latrines.

“Our next generation surely deserve a better opportunity in accessing basic education. Media headlines were flashing last year after some learners lost their lives as a result of falling into a pit when answering the call of nature. The reality is that not much has changed on the ground in many remote rural parts of the country,” read the statement.

Speaking to Radio Islam, the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa’s Welfare Coordinator Ml Asad Pandor said that the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo top the provinces with the highest number of pit latrines or inadequate sanitation facilities.

“It is estimated that close onto 7 billion Rands will be required to eradicate pit latrines from SA schools. The President himself has called upon the private sector as well as other stakeholders to join hands with government in order to eradicate pit latrines. Young learners are at times too scared to relieve themselves utilising a pit for fear of falling in. This causes them to either mess their clothes or even attempt to relieve themselves in the classroom.”

Ml Pandor has urged the South African public to donate towards the project.

Donations can be made directly into the account of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa –
