The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has urged Masaajid across South Africa to abide by the regulations allowing Muslims to return to places of worship to engage in congregational salaah.

The Muslim body welcomed the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday that congregational prayer under level 3 would be allowed from 1 June with strict conditions.

In his address to the nation, Ramaphosa said congregations will be limited in size to 50 people or less, depending on the space available.

Speaking to Radio Islam, Jamiat SA secretary general Ml Ebrahim Bham says there is no doubt that when the lockdown was implemented, South Africa had never experienced a pandemic like COVID-19 and it was treading on unchartered territory.

“We all knew that one day a time was going to come where this is going to be lifted and it was never going to be indefinite. No one had ever assumed that the lockdown is going to be indefinite. Thereafter came the situation where the very same medical expert said that now there is a need to ease because of the flattening of the curve and Alhamdulillah we thank Allah for that.”

Ml Bham says while congregational prayer has been allowed in Masaajid, it is going to be very challenging to accommodate more than the fifty worshippers that have been allowed to pray at places of worship.

“We must make this very clear. On behalf of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa, we are calling that every masjid must take it upon itself to have the necessary discipline and responsibility to adhere by the government regulations, in terms of having sanitizers, only allowing people who come with face masks and also to have the social distancing in the masaajid.”

Ml Bham has urged communities to continue making dua that the COVID-19 pandemic is lifted from South Africa and that Insha’Allah more people be allowed in Masaajid.
