Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina has commended the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa and the Muslim community for their efforts in assisting homeless shelters during the 21-day lockdown to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in South Africa.
Masina was conducting a site visit of the Coen Scholtz Hall in Kempton Park on Friday, one of four facilities in the city which is being utilized as a temporary shelter for the homeless during the nationwide lockdown.
After being admitted to the shelter the 124 homeless people are provided with bathing and ablution facilities including clean clothes and three meals a day donated by the Muslim community.
Masina has urged more people to come forward and assist the less fortunate during the lockdown.
“Communities have been making quite a number of donations including the Muslim community here in Ekurhuleni. So, I am quite happy they are provided with three meals a day. We are making a plea that all other organizations that can donate, let them assist so that we can deal with this challenge that is facing us in our municipality.”
The Jamiatul Ulama South Africa’s Ml Obeidullah Boja has urged the Muslim community to continue their donations to assist the homeless that are being taken care of at the shelters.
