As the blessed month of Ramadan sadly heads into the last ten days in the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown, the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa has issued some advice and guidelines for those willing to sit for I’tikaf.
While I’tikaf would under normal circumstances be observed in the Masaajid, under the current regulations that is not possible as public gatherings have been prohibited and places of worship closed to stop the spread of COVID-19.
In a newsletter, the Jamiat says individuals who envisage practicing the Sunnah of I’tikaf should endeavor to emulate the practice at home to the best of their ability.
“A suitable area within the home, preferably where congregational salaah can be performed should be demarcated for this purpose and the time spent fruitfully towards achieving the objective of I’tikaf.”
The Jamiat has also encouraged the women folk of the home to take advantage of the opportunity to perform Sunnah I’tikaf in their home.
“We hope in the Mercy of Allah that He bestows the same reward and benefit of Sunnah Mu-akkdah I’tikaf in the Masjid.’
The Jamiat has urged the Muslim community to make dua that Allah Insha’Allah accepts the Ibadat of the Ummah, make this month of spirituality uplifting and alleviate our current condition.
