Israeli Settlers use Ramadhan as Opportunity to Attack Palestinian Homes

April 24, 2021

Scuffles took place in occupied East Jerusalem on Friday night, for a second night between Israeli police and Palestinians. Tensions have been escalating over a ban on gatherings. Al Jazeera reports that videos posted of attacks have also resulted in mounting anger.

Following clashes on Thursday night, the Palestinian Red Crescent reported at least 105 wounded.  According to Al Jazeera about 20 people had had to be transferred to Hospital. Meanwhile, Israeli police claimed 20 officers had been injured.

Israeli police had on Thursday barred access to some areas where Palestinians usually gather in large numbers during Ramadan. The move triggered confrontations outside one of the entrances to the walled Old City.  Far right Israeli Jewish groups then arrived, chanting “death to Arabs” and bullying Palestinians. Jerusalem mayor Moshe Lion said he was in talks with leaders of the Palestinian East Jerusalem neighborhoods “to end this pointless violence”. He said he had tried to cancel the Lehava march, but that police had said the march was legal. He said that “dozens” of Jews who attacked Arabs had been arrested in the past two weeks.  Hundreds of Israeli settlers assaulted Palestinians in different areas across occupied Jerusalem on Thursday night. In Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, dozens of Israeli settlers threw stones at the homes of Palestinians. Eyewitnesses reported that the settlers damaged had dozens of Palestinian cars. Settlers attacked Palestinians’ properties in the French Hill neighborhood of occupied Jerusalem as well. Palestinian children can be heard crying in terror in social media videos gone viral.

The Palestinian presidency said that the growing incitement by extremist far-right Israeli settler groups calling for the killing of Arabs, was resulting in a wave of attacks against Palestinians living in Jerusalem’s Old City.
