Israeli Apartheid Week is NOT about Being Against Jews

March 06, 2017

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 06-03-2017

An anti-Apartheid and human rights activist based in the Netherlands says the annual Israeli Apartheid Week (IAW) will continue until apartheid against the Palestinian people is brought down.

Organised by Palestinian lobby group BDS, the 13th Israel Apartheid Week has officially kicked off in in Johannesburg yesterday.

IAW aims to highlight the plight of Palestinians under the oppression of the Israel.

Various events from film viewings, sport events and public lectures will be held across the country and other global cities.

Anti-Apartheid and human rights activist Adri Nieuwhof says about 250 cities across the world is involved in IAW.

“I think it will be a real threat to Israel. In South Africa, it’s endorsed by 85 organizations which included trade unions, political parties. So it’s safe to say Israeli Apartheid Week in South Africa is in the lead.”

Nieuwhof says IAW is not about being against Jews.

“Just like we fought Apartheid in South Africa, we didn’t fight whites, we fought supremacy of the whites in South Africa.”

At the same time former President Kgalema Motlanthe says the current strategy to resolve conflict between Middle Eastern countries, Israel and Palestine is failing considerably.

Speaking at the launch of IAW, Motlanthe says the two-state solution may not be the answer.

Motlanthe says it may be time to consider merging the two states to create a single Federal State to end the war and oppression of Palestinians.

“I am increasingly interested in the possibility of a democratic one state solution. Such a solution perhaps should take the form of a federal state in which each side enjoys the majority in territory.”

Motlanthe says ethnicity and religion should not still be dividing people and being the root cause of war. He says reconciliation should now be the main focus of the two nations.
