In Syria, at least nine government troops and 31 foreign militia fighters were killed in Israeli night raids. The nationalities of the foreign fighters are not as yet known. The attacks, believed to be the deadliest since 2018, had targeted an arms depot and military positions in the east of the country.

More than 18 strikes against several  targets had been carried out last night by the Israeli air force, in an area stretching from the town of Deir Ezzor to the Iraqi border. Al Arabiya reports that the 2018 strikes on the same region killed at least 55 pro-government fighters, Iraqis as well as Syrians.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, air strikes near the Iraqi border saw at least 12 Iran-backed fighters killed. Further, last week, on January 7, Israel targeted positions in the outskirts of Damascus, killing three pro-Iran fighters.

According to Al Arabiya, Israel, fearing that Iran will gain a foothold on it’s northern border, routinely attacks targets in Syria, which are linked to Iran. It has reportedly carried out hundreds of air and missile strikes on Syria since the conflict in the country broke out in 2011.
