The Institute for Race Relations says President Cyril Ramaphosa’s comments that there are no farm murders and land grabs in South Africa is fundamentally wrong.
Ramaphosa made the statement in New York at the UN General Assembly during an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday saying: “There are no killings of farmers or white farmers in South Africa. There’s no land grab in South Africa. We are involved in a process of discussing land reform.”
Ramaphosa was responding to US President Donald Trump’s tweet in which he claimed there is a “land and farm seizures and expropriations and the large scale killing of farmers”.
The IRR’s Gareth van Onselen says it’s unclear why Ramaphosa would make such a statement.
“The statement is fundamentally wrong. He needs to take responsibility for that statement and correct it. The presidency has failed to do that. They’ve basically said you have to look at the context of this kind of thing and they’ve said this is definitely not a lie.”
