International Coffee Day

October 01, 2020

BY MUMTAZ MOOSA SALEY

01:10:2020

Today marks international Coffee Day and me, being a lover of coffee, decided to find out why we celebrate this day. Did I mention that I know my beans and my pods well enough to create a beautiful brew?

October 2015 saw the birth of this new International day and it’s fair to say that this day I celebrated from the rich Aroma of Africa all around the world. This day does not only promote the discovery of the coffee bean, but it also helps promote Fair Trade coffee.

One of the key issues that fair-trade highlights are that no child labour may be used in the production or harvesting of Coffee beans. There have been reports that in many countries’ children as young as five are trafficked to work on such farms.

Fair Trade also sees larger farms ensuring that fair practices and wages are seen not only by the farmer but by the farmworkers as well.

The fair-trade system may have flaws, but we need to start somewhere.
