India has announced that it has suspended all military operations against Kashmir during the month of Ramadan for the first time in nearly two decades.
The move comes after months of intense fighting in the disputed Himalayan region.
India’s home ministry said in a series of tweets that it hoped the move will “help peace-loving Muslims observe Ramadan in a peaceful environment”.
“The Centre asks Security Forces not to launch operations in Jammu & Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan. It is important to isolate the forces that bring a bad name to Islam by resorting to mindless violence and terror.”
Indian security forces have however warned that they would retaliate if attacked.
The last Ramadan ceasefire took place in the year 2000 when Indian authorities and the Hizbul Mujahideen group briefly stopped fighting.
