August 02, 2018

Mohamed Ameen Dabhelia – 2018/08/02

Thirty-four girls have been abused, raped and tortured at a children’s shelter in India’s Bihar state, with the youngest victim being just seven years old.

Assistant Professor of Media Studies at the Aaliyah University in Kolkata India, Ghazala Yasmeen told Radio Islam that the story has shocked the country.

“It has affected us all, a shelter home which is supposed to be a protection of children which is run by the funds coming from government of Bihar, a place in Muzaffarpur.”

The head of the shelter, Brajesh Thakur, has been arrested along with nine other people.

Yasmeen says any shelter run under the auspices of the social welfare department of government requires an overview.

“The overview by the district collector, the overview by the administration, and the minister in charge happens to be a lady, no accountability is being put on her as to why there was no regular monitoring.”

According to NGO Child Rights and You – a child is sexually abused every 15 minutes in India, Crimes against minors have risen more than 500 percent over the past decade, citing government data.
