India Hurtling toward becoming World’s New Coronavirus Epicenter

September 02, 2020

India has recorded more than 78 500 new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours. The latest figure has raised it’s total to over 3.7 million.

Al Arabiyya reports that India, which has been reporting the highest daily increases in new cases for more than three weeks now, is quickly becoming the world’s coronavirus epicentre. According to the report, at India’s current rate of infection, the country is expected to soon pass the United States in total reported cases. The US has the highest total of recorded cases thus far.

India’s Health Ministry also reported 1 045 deaths in the past 24 hours. India’s COVID-19 related deaths have topped 66 000 people. Al Arabiyya reports that infections have been spreading fast from India’s cities to smaller towns and rural areas.

Meanwhile, experts say that India’s testing capacity of roughly 100 000 per day simply isn’t enough.
