Droupadi Murmu, has been sworn in as president in India. She is a former school teacher who turned politician. Murmu is from the Santhal tribe and was born in eastern Odisha state. She is the first of the country’s tribal communities to hold the highest office.
The president’s position is a largely ceremonial position in India. She was elected with 64 percent of the vote by members of India’s parliament and state assemblies. At the age of 64-year-old, she becomes the second woman president of the country.
Radio Islam spoke to Professor Rashid Abbasi, research scholar at the Academy of International Studies and Jamia Millia Islamia, who said:
“She has always been loyal to BJP. She has not expressed her view vocally. During the elections there was another contestant Yashwant Sinha who was a former BJP leader. Since Murmu was not popular and not well known among the general population -that’s what made her a suitable candidate.”
