IEC to Conduct Audit into Double Voting in Elections

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it will audit the election results and the votes cast to determine if double voting has occurred.

The IEC held a media briefing at the Tshwane results operation centre (ROC) on Thursday.

The electoral body says it has received a number of objections regarding voter irregularities, which are under investigation.

On Wednesday, voters and politicians posted photos and videos on social media, complaining of possible voter fraud.

One voter told Radio Islam that the system was flawed and that he had voted three times in Lenasia without any official aware that he cast his ballot more than once.

The IEC says the audit will involve the capture of information showing ID numbers of voters who cast votes at each polling station from the “zip-zap” scanners and completed VEC4 forms.

“This data will then be cross-referenced and compared to identify and instances of multiple voting to help establish whether such instances were isolated or systemic and impact it will have on the results.”

The IEC says it is also encouraged by the arrest of four voters in KwaZulu-Natal in connection with alleged double voting.

“As noted yesterday, any attempt to vote more than once leaves a clear footprint in the electoral process and the suspects were tracked down using this information.”

The release of the final election results may be delayed due to the irregularities that have been identified in the voting process.
