With  Ramadan just a few weeks away, Muslim voters in South Africa have been allowed to cast ballots before election day.

The May 8 general elections is expected to take place at the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says it has been engaging with the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) that would allow Muslim voters to apply for special votes on the 6 and 7 of May.

Speaking to Cape Talk, MJC deputy president Moulana Abdul-Khaliq Allie says the IEC will put measures in place to for Muslim volunteers, IEC staff and party agents who will be on duty.

He says special facilities will be arranged for prayers and consideration will be made for the fact that they are fasting.

“We are grateful in our democracy the recognition was given that the Muslim community will be fasting.”

He says the discussions with the IEC has shown the extent of compassion and consideration for the Muslim community in South Africa.

“Hopefully on that particular day, people and I am very certain across the spectrum in our country, there will be consideration for a potential Muslim voter that is standing in a queue and it is almost time to break the fast or close to that and consideration will be given in that particular regard.”

Ml Allie says the consideration by the IEC is a historic moment and speaks about how the Muslim community is ready to embrace the wellbeing of South Africa first.
