The Independent Electoral Commission says it hopes to add 1 million more voters to the voters’ roll during this weekend’s final voter registration drive.
The electoral body says more than twenty two thousand voting stations across the country will be open from 8am until 5pm on Saturday and Sunday to allow new voters to register and also allow existing voters to update and confirm their addresses and registration details.
Home affairs offices would also be open countrywide to coincide with registration, meaning eligible voters would be able to collect their ID documents or to obtain a temporary ID certificate in order to register.
The IEC’s Kate Bapela urged young South African to register to vote.
“I’m also appealing on this radio station that young people that are listening, they must also take the message to other for them come and register. Our registration is smooth, it’s painless, we don’t keep anyone long in out voting stations. As you come in, they check your ID confirm that its you, and register you, then in few minutes you’ll gone and done and out of our voting stations.”
The IEC says registered voters can also check if they are registered to vote via the ‘click, check and confirm’ facility on the electoral commission’s website at www.elections.org.za
