IEC: 25% of Registrations are New Voters, Registration Weekend Hugely Successful

According to Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo the voter registration weekend was a success, adding hundreds of new voters to the roll.

During a media conference on Monday, he shared some insight into the numbers that came through over the past weekend.

“New registrations account for 433,198 applications. This accounts for 25% of the total registration activity.”

Mamabolo said that many people registered but Kwa-Zulu-Natal came out in their numbers with registration activity topping almost 360 000

“The re-registrations account for the balance of 1.2 million. The province with the highest registration activity is KwaZulu-Natal, with 358,384.”

One of the major outcomes of the weekend showed that young people are getting involved in politics.

“Young persons in the age category 16 to 29 account for 402,401 of new registrations, which is 91% of all new registrations.”

He said the online platform was highly successful in allowing eligible voters to register, allowing a major boost for the voters roll as it gained momentum over the past few months.

“Since its inception in July, the online registration portal has processed 499,488 applications, which is is just under 500,000. Yesterday 121,000 applicants used this digital channel of registration.”

The online registration portal remains open until midnight on Monday.
