The nova 5T is Huawei’s second nova phone to come out this year and I was impressed with some of the features that it packed for a mid-range phone.

With good looks and solid performance, the nova 5T represents great value for a smartphone in 2019 where price have soared to exorbitant levels.

The nova 5T’s Kirin 980 chipset is equipped with dual NPU computing, resulting in the ability to cipher advanced algorithms. The phone runs of EMUI 9.1 based on Android 9 Pie.

The nova 5T challenges what’s possible with mobile phone cameras, and incorporates a quad camera array on the rear comprising a 48MP HD lens, 16MP wide-angle lens, 2MP macro lens, 2MP bokeh lens and 32 MP selfie Superstar lens.

These, together with the device’s AI technology and advanced beautification algorithms, ensure that consumers get the best images and videos every time.

The nova 5T’s AI-powered cameras also lay the groundwork for optimal video shooting effectiveness, with settings such as AI Image Stabilisation (AIS), Auto Exposure Lock (AEL), and Auto Focus Lock (AFL).

This device also comes equipped with an automatic video editing feature that is ideal for novices and brings simplicity to the video editing process. The camera has the ability to automatically recognise recurring subjects in videos, thus saving the user the hassle of sorting through clips, by creating edited subject-based videos.

The nova 5T has a IPS LCD panel with Full HD+ resolution at 2340 x 1080p which comes out to a gracious 412 ppi. However, while the LCD screen is still capable, it falls short of the vibrant OLED & AMOLED panels found in slightly higher priced phones.

There’s also no dark-mode on LCD screens for battery efficiency but you can manually lower the resolution under the Display settings to reduce battery drain.

I particularly appreciated that the power button which also serves as fingerprint sensor is extremely fast in unlocking the device. Face unlocking is also smooth and effortless.

The nova 5T’s AI-powered cameras also lay the groundwork for optimal video shooting effectiveness.

Overall, the Huawei nova 5T is a great phone but lacks the top-end features like wireless charging, an OLED screen or water resistance and expandable storage, but it does come in 128GB storage.

However if you can live without these extras and desire the camera quality of the P30 Pro, the Huawei Nova 5T is a phone you should seriously consider.

The Huawei nova 5T comes in two colors– Crush Blue and Midsummer Purple. The smartphone retails for R 11,999 or is available on contract from the following service providers:

• Vodacom – R599 Smart XS+ Plan

• MTN – R599 MFMXS Plan

• Telkom – R599 FREEME 1GB Plan

• CELL C – R619 Pinnacle 2G Plan
